Meet Our Rescued Hermit Crabs

Here are pictures of some of our successful rescues. All of them are living together comfortably in the crabitat.

Tink
Tink, Purple Pincer. Rescued October, 2006
Tink is the smallest of the crabs here at SFVHCR. This small male loves to climb and is often found clinging to the tall plastic plants. He also enjoys digging into the substrate.

Tonk
Tonk, Purple Pincer. Rescued October, 2006
Tonk is the mighty explorer who enjoys the challenge of climbing the silicone on the side of the crabitat.

Redlegs
Redlegs, Purple Pincer. Rescued August, 2007
A very pretty crab who was formerly housed in a "Hermit Crab Island" container. He still likes to hide in a coconut hut.

JJ
JJ, Purple Pincer. Rescued Septemer, 2007
JJ was a very gentle older crab. He liked to touch feelers with the other crabs and was an isolation companion to a wounded crab. JJ died June, 2008.

Shyguy
Shyguy, Purple Pincer. Rescued Septemer, 2007
Shyguy was injured when first rescued, the victim of an aggressive companion crab who wanted his shell. He has since changed shells and is currently molting to regenerate his damaged limbs.

Eddie
Eddie, Purple Pincer. Rescued Septemer, 2007
Eddie was rescued in a painted shell that was broken on the inside. That hurt him and made him aggressive. Since changing shells, he has become a well-behaved crab.

Plum
Plum, Purple Pincer. Rescued November, 2007
Plum came to us in a tank that was well set up except for shallow substrate. When new shells were introduced, he climbed into the largest one and immediately molted. Unfortunately, he was suffering from shock and didn't survive the molt.

Waldorf
Waldorf, Purple Pincer. Rescued November, 2007
One of two large crabs who were voluntarily surrendered by their owner. He changed into a bigger shell and is much happier. Although he was in a natural shell before, this one is large enough to allow him to withdraw completely inside the shell.

Statler
Statler, Purple Pincer. Rescued November, 2007
The other large crab was also in a shell that was too small. Although he seemed healthy, he was an older crab, and died a couple of months after he came to us.

Lucky
Lucky, Purple Pincer. Rescued November, 2007
Lucky is a medium sized crab still in a painted shell. He is shopping for a new one, but has yet to settle on a suitable replacement.

Parker
Parker, Purple Pincer. Rescued March, 2008
Parker is a medium-sized crab who came to us with claw and limb damage. He was agressive and spent two months in a long molt in the isolation tank. Currently, he is in a new shell and very content in the main crabitat.

Peter
Peter, Purple Pincer. Rescued March, 2008
Peter only recently changed out of his Superman painted shell. He's a small crab who enjoys spending time with the larger crabs.

MiniMe
MiniMe, Purple Pincer. Rescued June, 2008
MiniMe was a lonely crab who needed a new home. He currently has an undersized main pincer, which will hopefully correct with his next molt. He is adjusting nicely to his new environment and seems very happy.
